How to set up the HEINE ML4 LED HeadLight and Loupes

This guide will help you properly set up the HEINE ML4 LED headlight with binocular loupes. You will learn how to adjust the headband, illumination, and loupes to achieve a comfortable fit and a clear field of view during work.

System components

The HEINE ML4 LED consists of two key parts:

  • 1 – a headband that can be adjusted to fit your head size using adjustment screws,
  • 2 – a light module and binocular loupes mounted on a guide rail, allowing precise positioning.

For convenient and accurate adjustment, the system also includes:

  • 3 – a main locking screw (for the overall position of the loupes and the light),
  • 4 – a rheostat for switching the light on and continuously adjusting brightness,
  • 5 – a light spot size control (to change the diameter of the light beam),
  • 6 – markings for working distance and magnification on the guide rail.

Initial position before individual adjustment

Before putting the device on your head, follow these steps:

  • Loosen the main locking screw.
  • Align the loupes block and the light source so that they are parallel and pointing in the same direction.
  • Fully straighten the loupe guide rail by lowering the lever. Do not tighten the screws yet — final fixation will be done later.
  • Loosen the loupe fixing screws and slide each loupe to the outermost position.
  • Set the light spot size to its maximum.
  • Check the working distance the loupes are designed for (indicated in millimetres on the guide rail, for example 420 mm).
  • Leave the light switched off.

Adjustment

1. Headband adjustment

Put the ML4 on your head and adjust its position using the two screws. The headband should sit comfortably on the crown of the head and rest on the forehead.

Move the loupes and the light along the guide rail as close to your eyes as possible. Hold the light only by its housing to avoid disturbing the alignment between the loupes and the light. Make sure your eyelashes do not touch the lenses.

If you wear glasses, position the loupes as close to the lenses as possible without touching them.

Then tighten the main locking screw.

2. Switching on and adjusting the light

Switch on the light using the rheostat on the right-hand side and adjust the brightness. Start at the lowest setting.

3. Merging the field of view

Slowly slide both loupes from the outer edges toward the centre of the guide rail until their fields of view merge into one clear image. Tighten the loupe fixing screws.

4. Final check

Extend your thumb in front of you at the working distance of the loupes (for example, 420 mm). You should see the thumb clearly, centred within the illuminated field.

Setup complete!

Additional adjustment and comfort

Depending on whether you are working seated or standing, you can always readjust the light and loupes to achieve the best field of view. This is especially useful during long procedures. Readjustment helps you find a comfortable viewing angle and posture, reducing strain on the neck.

Loupe configuration information

HEINE binocular loupes are available with different magnification options: 2.5x, 3.5x, 4x, and 6x, as well as various working distances.

Details on available loupe configurations and the technical specifications of the HEINE ML4 LED can be found in the catalogue on our website.

Below you will find a video that clearly demonstrates all stages of setting up the HEINE ML4 LED — from preparing the device to working with its main controls.
