How to Set Up the HEINE OMEGA 600 Indirect Binocular Ophthalmoscope

This guide will help you set up the HEINE OMEGA 600 binocular indirect ophthalmoscope for comfortable and confident use. You will learn how to properly prepare the headband, adjust lighting and interpupillary distance, and get familiar with the main control elements.

Ophthalmoscope Components

The device consists of two key parts: the adjustable headband and the optical unit. The optical unit contains all the main settings: filters, apertures, and the interpupillary distance control. The brightness regulator is also located on the side.

Aperture switch (left side)

The aperture switch is located on the left side of the optical unit. Available options:

  • Large aperture
  • Medium aperture
  • Small aperture
  • Diffuser — especially useful for peripheral examinations.

Filter switch (right side)

The filter switch is located on the right side of the optical unit:

  • No filter — for standard examinations
  • Yellow filter — for light-sensitive patients and children
  • Green filter — for enhanced contrast of retinal vessels
  • Blue (cobalt) filter — for working with fluorescein and detecting corneal damage or foreign bodies.

Stereoscopic mode adjustment (bottom)

Below the optical unit is a lever for adjusting stereoscopic mode — the small pupil function. It allows you to:

  • Adjust convergence (viewing angle)
  • Adjust parallax (angle and synchronization of illumination).

For most examinations, it’s recommended to set the lever to the widest position — this provides maximum 3D effect and minimal reflections. If you need to examine the periphery or work with small pupils, you can narrow the angle (note: this may slightly reduce the stereo effect).

Initial Device Position Before Personal Adjustment

Before putting the device on your head, make sure to:

  • Loosen the adjustment knobs on the top and back of the headband
  • Unlock the optical unit using the locking lever
  • Move the eyepieces to their outermost positions
  • Set the aperture to the widest setting
  • Make sure the filter is set to “no filter”
  • Make sure the light is switched off.

Setup

1. Adjusting the Headband for Comfortable Fit

Put the device on your head. Adjust the top knob so that the front pad sits just above your eyebrows. Then adjust the rear knob until the fit is comfortable.

If the device feels front-heavy, make sure the rear pad is positioned under the occipital bone — this helps balance the weight. Move the optical unit close to your eyes (without touching) and lock it with the locking lever.

The back of the headband can tilt, and the soft artificial leather padding ensures comfort during long exams.

2. Turning On and Adjusting the Light

Turn on the device using the side brightness regulator. Brightness is smoothly adjustable from 3% to 100%. The first click sets the standard maximum brightness.

Rotating the knob further activates the VisionBoost function, which increases brightness up to 245% of standard, while remaining fully photobiologically safe. This is especially useful for examining patients with media opacities such as cataracts.

3. Setting the Interpupillary Distance

Hold your arm out straight in front of you with your thumb up. Close your left eye and use your right eye to align the right eyepiece so the thumb is centered in your field of view. Then do the same with your left eye and the left eyepiece.

If the thumb is centered in both eyes, the interpupillary distance is set. Then use the illumination height adjustment to center the light spot in the field of view.

Setup complete!

During a Break

If you need to pause or speak with the patient, simply flip the optical unit up — all individual settings will remain unchanged.
