Today, HEINE employs 500 people, and its products reach customers in more than 100 countries worldwide. However, the core principles-independence and the highest possible quality standards-have remained unchanged over the years. These values are undoubtedly among the key factors behind the company’s great success. In this special year, we want to share the story of our company, showing how it all began and what it has become.
At the age of just 30, with two small children and a third on the way, a qualified physicist decided to apply his expertise and found a company. He wanted a better future for his young family while following his own core principles-building a life and business upon them.
These fundamental ideas became the four guiding principles of HEINE Optotechnik, which continue to shape the company today:
To do something meaningful and make an important contribution to humanity. To always produce the best possible product. To do essential things in-house, because only then can the highest quality be guaranteed. And to remain independent, ensuring the ability to make the right long-term decisions autonomously.
Helmut A. Heine pondering a new ingenious invention
In the production of high-quality medical instruments, Helmut A. Heine saw an opportunity to do something of real value for people. He was convinced that the best, most precise instruments would always enable faster and more reliable diagnoses. With this conviction, he began designing and manufacturing his first instruments-a hand-held otoscope and a direct ophthalmoscope.

In the early years, HEINE produced instruments for other companies, such as measurement glasses for Rodenstock, to ensure the young enterprise received urgently needed orders.
In the 1950s, HEINE expanded its product range with several new models, offering various otoscopes and direct ophthalmoscopes, as well as a series of innovative power sources. The decade was challenging for HEINE, yet during this time the company’s product quality became well-known within the industry, driving steady growth.
In the 1960s and 1970s, HEINE broadened its ophthalmology range with products such as retinoscopes and even a gonioscope, and introduced new devices for otorhinolaryngology and proctology. At the same time, HEINE expanded internationally-by 1970, more than 70% of its sales were generated outside Germany, with about 200 employees at the company.
The “Diagnostik-Woche” in Düsseldorf evolved into one of the most renowned international medical exhibitions. When it was renamed “MEDICA” in 1974, HEINE participated as one of its founding exhibitors. MEDICA remains the world’s largest medical trade fair to this day.
The first indirect hand-held ophthalmoscope, MONOKULAR, was introduced in 1975. It offered stereoscopic views of the fundus through a binocular attachment.
In the 1980s, HEINE launched a state-of-the-art galvanic facility, further investing in vertical integration. The company acquired a tool and mold manufacturer, integrating it into its plastic injection molding operations, strengthening its expertise in thermoplastics. In 1984, HEINE acquired Zorn GmbH & Co. KG, a leading manufacturer of precision miniature lamps for medical applications.
In 1983, HEINE introduced the first binocular indirect ophthalmoscope, the OMEGA 100. The company continues to develop this instrument-the current fourth generation is the OMEGA 500. Around the same time, HEINE launched the world’s first fiber-optic laryngoscope with a fully integrated light guide, setting a new standard for functionality and durability in this market segment.
HEINE acquired the Australian company “Camina Brothers,” which had long manufactured instruments for HEINE, and established its subsidiary “HEINE Australia PTY.”
In the 1990s, HEINE developed:
In response to the growing importance of the U.S. medical technology market, HEINE established a subsidiary in the United States. Oliver Heine, the founder’s grandson, became the founder of HEINE USA LTD.
HEINE celebrated its company anniversary, proudly looking back on 60 years of success. After the passing of founder Helmut A. Heine, his son Helmut M. Heine assumed leadership of the company.
Oliver Heine returned to the company’s headquarters to join the management team.

Today, 70 years later, the founding principles established by Helmut A. Heine continue to define the company’s structure, strategy, and development. HEINE remains an independent, family-owned enterprise, now managed by the third generation. The company continues to invest heavily in its manufacturing facilities in Germany to ensure that all critical components-from optics to metal casting and electroplating-are produced in-house.
HEINE currently employs over 500 people, including around 400 at its main plant in Germany, where the company will continue to develop and manufacture top-quality medical diagnostic instruments.
